What to include in a UK offer letter

Offer letter FAQs

What should a UK offer letter include?
Job title, start date, salary, place of work, working hours, the conditions of the offer (references and right to work), an expiry date, and a note that a full contract of employment will follow. It does not replace the written statement of particulars, which must be provided on or before the first day.
Is an offer letter legally binding in the UK?
It can be, once the candidate accepts, particularly if it sets out the key terms. Most employers make the offer conditional on satisfactory references and proof of right to work, so it can be withdrawn if those conditions are not met.
What is the difference between an offer letter and a contract?
The offer letter confirms the headline terms. The contract of employment is the full legal document covering all terms and conditions, which must be given on or before day one.
